ZeroAvia and Hybrid Air Vehicles Sign Agreement to Collaborate on Zero-Emission Airlander

by Editorial Staff

ZeroAvia and Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) have announced a strategic partnership through a signed Memorandum of Understanding to develop a hydrogen-electric variant of the Airlander 10 aircraft. This collaboration aims to create a fully zero-emission aviation solution, leveraging the unique capabilities of both companies and their innovative technologies.

The Airlander 10 is a revolutionary hybrid aircraft that utilizes a combination of aerostatic lift from helium, aerodynamic lift from its airframe, and vectored thrust. With a payload capacity of 10 tonnes and a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles, it offers a versatile platform for various missions. The initial model will use four diesel engines, already providing a significant emissions reduction of up to 90% compared to similar aircraft. The integration of ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-electric propulsion system is the critical next step to eliminate in-flight carbon emissions entirely, enabling the transport of over 100 passengers with reduced operating costs.

ZeroAvia brings its advanced ZA600 powertrain to the partnership. This 600kW hydrogen-electric engine has achieved key regulatory milestones, secured hundreds of pre-orders, and is already undergoing flight testing on a 19-seat fixed-wing aircraft. The Airlander’s large hull presents an ideal structure for housing the necessary hydrogen fuel storage, making it a perfect candidate for ZeroAvia’s near-market technology, which includes low-temperature PEM fuel cells and electric propulsion systems currently in the certification process.

The agreement extends beyond the Airlander 10, as the companies will also explore applying ZeroAvia’s technology to HAV’s future larger aircraft and assess the required hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Both companies are UK-based innovators, highlighting the partnership’s potential to generate significant high-skilled jobs and bolster the country’s position in sustainable aerospace, including potential defence applications.

Leadership from both companies expressed strong support. Tom Grundy, CEO of HAV, commended ZeroAvia’s progress in developing hydrogen-electric propulsion, confirming the partnership accelerates their goal of a zero-emission Airlander. Val Miftakhov, Founder and CEO of ZeroAvia, highlighted the Airlander’s ability to open new markets with its efficiency and operational flexibility, emphasizing the joint commitment to UK manufacturing and growth.
