Sierra Space, a leading defense technology company, has announced the successful completion of a critical series of pre-flight tests for its Dream Chaser® spaceplane at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. This significant progress marks a major step toward the spacecraft’s inaugural free-flyer mission, reinforcing its role in advancing national security and space transportation.
The comprehensive testing campaign included vital Electromagnetic Interference and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMI/EMC) evaluations at NASA’s Space Systems Processing Facility. These tests confirmed the spacecraft’s operational resilience in expected electromagnetic environments. Furthermore, rigorous tow testing was conducted at high speeds using a Freightliner truck to simulate landing dynamics and validate autonomous navigational parameters for runway operations.
A key milestone was the successful demonstration of the end-to-end communication link between the Dream Chaser spaceplane and Mission Control in Louisville, Colorado, utilizing NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System. This verified the spacecraft’s readiness for real-time command and control during its upcoming orbital missions. The campaign concluded with a post-landing recovery rehearsal, proving the procedures for safing the vehicle and accessing sensitive payloads promptly.
With these milestones achieved, Dream Chaser is now scheduled for a final round of acoustic testing in December 2025. Subsequent modifications in Colorado will focus on enhancing the vehicle for specific national security applications, expanding its mission versatility for defense requirements and Low Earth Orbit operations.
The spacecraft remains on track for its first launch, targeted for Q4 2026, under NASA’s CRS-2 contract. This demonstration mission will culminate in a runway landing at Vandenberg Space Force Base, showcasing its reusability.
