In a landmark agreement, Boeing and Somon Air have announced that Tajikistan’s national carrier has committed to its largest-ever aircraft order, selecting up to 14 fuel-efficient airplanes. The deal includes a historic commitment for up to four widebody 787-9 Dreamliners and up to ten 737-8 single-aisle jets. This strategic fleet expansion will enable Somon Air to modernize its operations and significantly grow its international network.
Somon Air, which currently operates a fleet of six Next-Generation 737s to 25 destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, is making a major investment in its future. The order marks the airline’s first-ever widebody purchase. The advanced 787-9 will be deployed to launch new intercontinental routes from its hub at Dushanbe International Airport, offering passengers superior comfort on long-haul flights. The 737-8, a member of the 737 MAX family, will form the foundation for the carrier’s short and medium-haul network, replacing older aircraft.
Abdulkosim Valiev, CEO of Somon Air, emphasized that this commitment reinforces the airline’s dedication to providing exceptional service. He also highlighted the built-in flexibility, allowing the airline to adjust its fleet plans based on evolving market demand. The new aircraft are a key part of the airline’s strategy for international network expansion.
The economic and environmental benefits of the new fleet are substantial. Boeing highlights that the 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX together deliver a 20-25% improvement in fuel use compared to the airplanes they replace. This enhanced fuel efficiency translates directly to lower per-seat costs and reduced maintenance costs, providing Somon Air with superior operating economics as it scales its operations.
The agreement was signed during the C5+1 Summit, underscoring the diplomatic dimension of the commercial deal. When finalized, the order will be a significant boost to the U.S. aerospace industry, supporting an estimated 11,000 jobs. Paul Righi, Boeing vice president of Sales and Marketing, stated that Somon Air’s continued choice of Boeing jets solidifies a strategic partnership and provides the airline with the versatile tools needed for effective growth.
For Somon Air, this order represents a transformative step. The modern Boeing 737 aircraft and new 787-9 jets will be instrumental in maintaining the highest standards of flight safety and service quality, marking a new chapter for the national airline of Tajikistan as it connects to the world.
