Cessna Citation Ascend Achieves FAA Certification, Bringing Advanced Features to the Most Popular Midsize Business Jet Family

by Editorial Staff

On November 5, the Cessna Citation Ascend, manufactured by Textron Aviation, achieved a pivotal milestone by receiving its type certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certification, a critical green light for the aircraft’s design and safety, paves the way for its entry into service later this year. The successful conclusion of an intensive flight test program, which utilized two test articles to accumulate over 1,000 flight hours, validated the aircraft’s readiness for customer delivery.

The Citation Ascend is positioned as a significant evolution within the proven 560XL series, a family with over 1,000 aircraft delivered since 2000. It integrates substantial advancements aimed at enhancing the customer experience, directly informed by operator feedback. The result is a business jet that delivers a refined blend of performance, cabin comfort, and advanced technology.

A central feature of the Ascend is its entirely new cockpit, centered on the sophisticated Garmin G5000 avionics suite. This system is designed to boost both safety and productivity. Key technologies include autothrottle to reduce pilot workload, three large 14-inch high-resolution displays, and synthetic vision technology that renders a graphical view of terrain. For connectivity and communication, the aircraft is equipped with a cockpit voice and data satellite transceiver. It also features Garmin’s advanced weather detection and offers optional controller-pilot data link communications (CPDLC) for more efficient transatlantic routing.

The aircraft’s performance is driven by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545D engines, which provide increased thrust and notable fuel efficiency. This powertrain enables a maximum speed of 441 knots and a maximum range of 1,940 nautical miles. The Ascend also offers a practical full fuel payload of 900 pounds, adding to its mission flexibility. Further enhancing operational efficiency is an unattended Honeywell RE100 [XL] Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). This system allows for self-management and cabin pre-conditioning with reduced fuel burn and noise.

Complementing its technical prowess is the newly designed, luxurious flat floor cabin. This spacious interior provides customers with versatility and a superior level of comfort, making the aircraft suitable for a wide range of mission capabilities. From its powerful engines and efficient APU to its pilot-friendly cockpit and comfortable cabin, the Citation Ascend is crafted to deliver a comprehensive and favorable operating experience.
