In a landmark agreement announced at the C5+1 Summit, Air Astana JSC has signed a deal with Boeing to purchase up to fifteen 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This strategic fleet modernization and expansion initiative represents the largest single airplane purchase in the history of the Kazakhstan flag carrier. The order is a significant boost for the U.S. aerospace industry, with Boeing confirming it will support the sustainment of more than 20,000 American jobs across its supply chain.

This direct order for 15 new widebody jets, combined with three additional 787-9s to be acquired through lessors, will enable a substantial growth of Air Astana’s long-haul capabilities. Upon finalization of all deliveries, the airline’s fleet will encompass up to 18 of these advanced aircraft. The arrival of the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner next year will mark the commencement of an ambitious new development phase for the airline, fundamentally enhancing its service capabilities.

According to Peter Foster, CEO of Air Astana, the 787-9 is destined for success with the airline and its discerning passengers due to its customer-friendly cabin, exceptional fuel efficiency, and range flexibility. The primary strategic goal is to significantly boost connectivity from the Central Asia and Caucasus region to key international markets across Asia, Europe, and for the first time, North America. The ultra-efficient Dreamliner, configured to seat 303 passengers, will not only facilitate this network expansion but also allow for increased capacity on existing routes currently served by the airline’s three older Boeing 767 widebody jets.

The 787 Dreamliner is globally renowned for its advanced technology, superior passenger comfort, and industry-leading operational economics. By joining the extensive family of global operators of the 787, Air Astana will leverage an aircraft type that flies nearly half a million passengers daily and connects more countries than any other widebody fleet in the world. This major investment underscores a long-term vision to modernize its operations and elevate the overall passenger experience, solidifying its position as a leading carrier in its region for the next decade and beyond.
