In a significant deployment to bolster homeland defense, the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group (CSG) entered the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) area of responsibility on November 11. This strategic move was directed by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to support the President’s directive to dismantle Transnational Criminal Organizations and counter narco-terrorism. The arrival of the world’s largest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), marks a substantial enhancement of U.S. force presence in the Western Hemisphere.
According to Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Sean Parnell, this enhanced presence will increase the U.S. capacity to detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit actors and activities that threaten the safety and prosperity of the United States. The carrier strike group’s mission is to degrade and dismantle the criminal networks that exploit shared borders and maritime domains, operating under a Joint Task Force that includes forces already in the region, such as the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group.
The USS Gerald R. Ford, a first-in-class carrier, provides a formidable platform for power projection. With a crew of over 4,000 Sailors and dozens of tactical aircraft, it can conduct sustained operations at sea, capable of simultaneous catapult launches and recoveries of fixed-wing aircraft day and night. Adm. Alvin Holsey, Commander of SOUTHCOM, stated that the deployment represents a critical step in reinforcing the U.S. resolve to protect regional security and the American homeland.
The strike group’s warfighting assets are extensive. The core is Carrier Air Wing Eight, which includes multiple squadrons flying the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the E/A-18G Growler for electronic attack, and the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye for airborne command and control. The air wing also includes HSC-9 and HSM-70 helicopters. The CSG is further protected by Destroyer Squadron Two’s Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers—USS Bainbridge (DDG 96), USS Mahan (DDG 72), and USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81). These destroyers provide robust anti-air, anti-submarine, and anti-surface capabilities, with the Winston S. Churchill specifically serving as the integrated air and missile defense command ship for the group. This collective force will work to disrupt narcotics trafficking and counter the destabilizing threats posed by transnational criminal organizations across the vast USSOUTHCOM AOR.
