American Airlines has reaffirmed its long-standing relationship with CFM International, selecting the CFM LEAP-1A engine to power its upcoming deliveries of Airbus A321neo aircraft. The agreement covers engines for aircraft ordered two years ago and includes a long-term maintenance arrangement, ensuring support for the carrier’s expanding fleet for years to come.

The announcement was made jointly by American CEO Robert Isom and GE Aerospace Chairman and CEO H. Lawrence Culp, Jr., underscoring the strategic importance of the partnership. American currently operates 84 A321neo and five A321XLR aircraft, with an additional 120 A321neo and 35 A321XLR on order through 2032—all slated for LEAP-1A power. The airline also holds options for 116 more A320neo family aircraft, which would similarly feature CFM engines if exercised.

“American is proud to operate more CFM and GE Aerospace powered aircraft than any other airline globally, a relationship spanning nearly a century,” said Isom. “These engines will maximize our fleet investments, allowing us to deliver the best network to our customers using top-performing technology.”

Culp echoed the sentiment, emphasizing GE Aerospace’s commitment to supporting American’s growth. “We are proud to power American’s modernized fleet and are dedicated to delivering best-in-class LEAP engines as they serve more destinations,” he stated.

The LEAP-1A engine brings significant advancements, including 15% improved fuel efficiency and 15% lower carbon emissions compared to previous-generation engines, thanks to technologies like composite fan blades and ceramic matrix composites. Advanced health monitoring and a robust maintenance ecosystem further enhance reliability and asset utilization.

American recently introduced the A321XLR, becoming the only U.S. carrier to operate the aircraft. It features Flagship Suite seats, premium economy, and a revamped main cabin with high-speed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled entertainment, elevating transcontinental travel.

Gaël Méheust, president and CEO of CFM International, expressed pride in the extended collaboration. “It is highly gratifying when an airline of this stature considers CFM integral to its long-term strategy. American has seen the LEAP engine’s benefits firsthand, and we remain focused on delivering the quality and support they expect.”
