Rohde & Schwarz Partners with Orbint to Pioneer Space-Based Signal Intelligence

by Editorial Staff

In a strategic move to bolster European defense capabilities, the technology firm Rohde & Schwarz has acquired a stake in Orbint GmbH, a startup originating from the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. This partnership aims to merge their expertise, advancing satellite-based signal intelligence (SIGINT) and reinforcing the long-term technological sovereignty of Germany and Europe in the space domain.

Orbint, founded in 2025 by University of the Bundeswehr Munich researchers Alexander Schmidt, Simon Heine, Daniel Weinzierl, and Winfried Stock, is pioneering a novel approach to SIGINT. The company leverages a distributed satellite network capable of detecting, identifying, and locating a wide array of signals in near real-time, with data processed directly onboard the satellites. This technology sets new standards for reconnaissance from space.

For Rohde & Schwarz, this investment expands its extensive portfolio of electromagnetic spectrum reconnaissance solutions into the space sector. Alexander Orellano, Executive Vice President at Rohde & Schwarz, emphasized the critical nature of this capability, stating, “In the current geopolitical security situation, space-based signal intelligence is key for Europe.” He highlighted the deliberate choice to collaborate with a startup to accelerate the development of advanced defense technologies.

The founders of Orbint selected Rohde & Schwarz for its deep technological expertise and market presence. Alexander Schmidt, co-managing director of Orbint, noted that the partnership offers more than capital; it provides significant added value through combined innovation potential and operational excellence.

Orbint emerged from the SeRANIS small satellite mission, a project funded by dtec.bw. University President Prof. Dr. Eva-Maria Kern hailed the spin-off as a success, demonstrating how targeted research strengthens national security. Prof. Dr. Andreas Knopp, head of the SeRANIS project, underscored the rapid five-year journey from basic research to a viable company, a pace essential for transforming defense innovations into operational capabilities. This collaboration marks a significant step in transferring cutting-edge research into practical, sovereign solutions for the German Armed Forces.
