Czech industrial-technology group CSG has acquired a 49% stake in Hirtenberger Defence Systems (HDS) from Hungary’s 4iG group, marking its first acquisition in Austria and significantly expanding its mortar systems and ammunition portfolio.

The transaction strengthens CSG’s production capacities in Europe and forms part of a broader strategic partnership between the two companies. Under the agreement, CSG and 4iG are also exploring the establishment of a joint venture in Slovakia, which could support joint industrial programs and participate in the assembly of selected products.

HDS, a traditional European manufacturer with over 160 years of heritage, produces mortar systems and ammunition in 60, 81, and 120 mm calibers. Its portfolio includes high-explosive fragmentation, illumination, smoke, and training rounds, complementing CSG’s existing artillery ammunition production.

“By acquiring a stake in Hirtenberger Defence Systems, CSG is expanding its portfolio with another key segment,” said Jiří Novotný, Chief Operating Officer of MSM Group. “We are gaining cutting-edge technological know-how and new production capacities. This will enable us to increase ammunition output for both European and global customers.”

The partnership aims to establish a Central European industrial cooperation framework capable of serving growing international demand. István Sárhegyi, Chairman and CEO of 4iG SDT, noted that a key objective is for HDS to serve as a reliable domestic industrial supplier to the Hungarian Defence Forces while strengthening regional presence with modern mortar systems.

Beyond ammunition, HDS develops complete mortar systems, sighting and optical technologies, support equipment, and digital fire control systems. These advanced fire control systems enable precise targeting, integration into battle management systems, and targeting without direct line of sight or external navigation—capabilities that significantly enhance CSG’s overall portfolio.

The acquisition aligns with CSG’s long-term strategy of vertical integration in ammunition and land systems manufacturing, enabling better supply chain control and optimized production across the group. Together, the companies will offer comprehensive mortar solutions combining systems, ammunition, sighting technologies, and logistical support.
