In a landmark commitment to growth, Alaska Airlines has placed the largest aircraft order in its history, selecting Boeing to supply the jets that will power its ambitious expansion plans. The announcement, made jointly by the two Seattle-area companies, solidifies their six-decade partnership at a pivotal moment for the carrier.
The record-setting deal is a dual-pronged investment in both domestic and international futures. For its mainline fleet, Alaska has ordered 105 737-10 jets, the largest and most efficient variant of the 737 MAX family, with options for 35 more. These aircraft are designed to serve high-density routes with a lower cost per seat, enabling network growth and replacing older models. Simultaneously, the airline is boosting its long-haul ambitions with an order for five 787 Dreamliner widebody jets, which will be used to open new nonstop routes to destinations in Europe and Asia.
“This fleet investment builds on the strong foundation Alaska has created,” stated Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group. “These planes will fuel our expansion to more destinations across the globe and ensure our guests travel aboard the newest, most fuel-efficient and state-of-the-art aircraft.”
The order is a cornerstone of Alaska’s long-term strategic plan. The 737-10s will serve as the backbone for domestic and near-international growth, prized for their passenger capacity and operating economics. The 787s, known for their fuel efficiency and passenger comfort on lengthy flights, provide the tool needed to competitively enter deeper international markets. Alaska currently operates five 787s and has now committed to a total of twelve.
Stephanie Pope, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, celebrated the deal, calling it “historic” and “underwritten by Alaska Airlines’ record of strong performance.” The order also marks a significant vote of confidence in Boeing’s 737 MAX program, as Alaska will now have 174 MAX jets on order to complement its existing fleet of 248 Boeing 737s.
With this move, Alaska Airlines signals a clear intent to evolve from a strong West Coast carrier into a more formidable global competitor, using a modernized, efficient fleet to connect its network to the world.
