LanzaJet, a pioneering next-generation fuels technology company, has officially commenced operations and begun producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at its LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Soperton, Georgia. This landmark achievement represents the world’s first commercial-scale production of jet fuel using ethanol as a primary feedstock. It marks a historic breakthrough for the aviation sector, providing the first viable, non-oil-based renewable fuel solution that is fully compatible with existing aircraft engines and infrastructure without requiring modifications.
This milestone is the culmination of a 15-year journey of intensive research and development, strategic collaboration, significant investment, and technological scale-up. It delivers critical evidence that ethanol can be successfully and efficiently transformed into certified jet fuel on a commercial scale. The timing of this breakthrough is pivotal for the industry. The dominant bio-oil HEFA production pathway is anticipated to near a plateau in the availability of its qualified feedstocks. LanzaJet’s proprietary Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology has now unlocked the next essential wave of SAF production, a pathway that is globally applicable and urgently needed to meet decarbonization goals.
The successful launch of the Soperton plant validates the entire ATJ process, from feedstock to final product, establishing a new, resilient supply chain for clean energy. This facility stands as a foundational project for a new global industry, demonstrating a scalable model for converting abundant, sustainable ethanol into drop-in jet fuel.
Jimmy Samartzis, Chief Executive Officer of LanzaJet, emphasized the collective effort behind this success. He stated that the achievement proves what is possible by uniting innovation, resilience, ingenuity, and teamwork to develop an entirely new industry and overcome significant challenges. He described the milestone as a major win for global aviation and a beacon of hope for the future, highlighting LanzaJet’s story of impact, value creation, and commitment. Samartzis concluded that the company is now uniquely positioned with both the proven technology and the operational know-how to actively shape the future of the sustainable fuels industry in the coming decade.
