Raytheon, Avio Sign MoU to Establish New Solid Rocket Motor Facility in the US

by Editorial Staff

Raytheon, an RTX business, has taken a significant step to bolster the United States’ defense industrial base by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Avio to establish a new, state-of-the-art solid rocket motor (SRM) production facility on U.S. soil. This strategic partnership is designed to directly address the growing demand for advanced propulsion systems, ensuring a resilient and expanded supply chain for critical munitions. Under the agreement, Raytheon will receive preferred access to a substantial share of the new factory’s production capacity, solidifying a reliable source for future needs.

This initiative represents a major milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the two companies, building directly upon recent joint efforts. These include a contract signed in July 2024 for preliminary engineering work on the Mk 104 rocket motor and a subsequent purchase order to fund the project through its Critical Design Review and the procurement of long-lead materials for the qualification phase. This progression underscores a committed and accelerating partnership.

Bob Butz, Raytheon’s Vice President of Operations, Supply Chain, and Quality, emphasized that the agreement directly supports customer demands. He stated that by leveraging Avio’s extensive experience and unique capabilities in SRM propulsion development and manufacturing, Raytheon is fundamentally strengthening its capacity to produce vital weapon systems. This move establishes an additional, highly capable domestic supplier, enhancing competition and security of supply.

The new Avio facility will operate as a vertically integrated merchant supplier, serving Raytheon and other customers. This model controls the entire manufacturing process, promising high quality and efficiency. Avio USA’s CEO, Retired Vice Admiral Jim Syring, expressed pride in the partnership, noting the company will leverage the immense pedigree and experience of its parent company, Avio S.p.A., as it builds its U.S. presence. Both companies are committed to the successful implementation of this initiative, which will be instrumental in supporting the defense needs of the United States and its allies by delivering high-quality defense products. This collaboration is a clear response to the increasing demands of the global security environment, ensuring continued access to cutting-edge solid rocket motor technology.
