Lufthansa Technik has successfully completed its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner cabin modification at its European Center of Excellence for widebody Base Maintenance Services in Malta. The milestone strengthens the site’s growing widebody portfolio.

The comprehensive project involved removing and installing a new seating configuration, along with a full upgrade of cabin monuments to enhance comfort and passenger experience. The program, carried out in collaboration with Boeing and operator Lufthansa, featured significant technical complexity, including the conversion of a bay to accommodate increased space requirements. Six further 787 cabin modifications are scheduled in Malta by year-end.

“Completing our first Boeing 787 cabin modification is a proud moment for the entire team,” said Marcus Motschenbacher, Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Aircraft Maintenance Services at Lufthansa Technik. “This program showcases our technical capabilities, our reliability, and the dedication of our workforce.”

Lindsey Douglas, Vice President at Boeing, noted: “This collaboration between Boeing and Lufthansa Technik helps to expand post-delivery retrofit options for the 787 Dreamliner fleet. As a Boeing Licensed Service Center, Lufthansa Technik will add vital capacity.”

Thomas Spriesterbach of Lufthansa Airlines added: “I am very pleased that Lufthansa Technik and Boeing teamed up to bring new technology aircraft more quickly into our operations. Especially the new Allegris cabin installed here in Malta is the game changer for our passengers.”

To support growing demand, Lufthansa Technik Malta is constructing a new 6,400-square-meter hangar, set to open by late 2026. The facility will accommodate one widebody aircraft and three narrowbody parking spots, bringing the site’s total to four hangars capable of servicing nearly all Airbus types and the Boeing 787.

In 2024, Lufthansa Technik was designated the first Boeing Licensed Service Center (BLSC) for 787 cabin modifications. This authorization enables the company to design new cabin interiors, provide engineering, and perform integration and certification in line with customer requirements—further solidifying Malta’s role as a key hub for widebody expertise.
