Japan’s police strengthen their fleet, ordering three Airbus H135 helicopters.

Japan’s National Police Agency (NPA) is doubling down on its fleet modernization, placing a new order for three Airbus H135 helicopters. This strategic acquisition is set to significantly enhance law enforcement capabilities across the northern and western regions of the country.

The three aircraft are destined for the Hokkaido, Shimane, and Miyagi Prefectural Police departments. For these units, the H135 represents a versatile airborne asset capable of performing a high-tempo rotation of missions. From routine aerial patrols and rapid response to complex search and rescue operations over challenging terrain, the helicopters are designed to provide critical support to ground units. Their role will also extend to tactical transport, ensuring officers can be deployed swiftly when and where they are needed most.

This follow-on order strengthens a long-running partnership between the NPA and Airbus. With this latest purchase, the agency’s operational fleet of Airbus helicopters grows to 26 units, underscoring a sustained vote of confidence in the platform.

The H135 is widely regarded as a benchmark for police work due to its advanced technology. It features the Helionix avionics suite, which includes a 4-axis autopilot that reduces pilot workload during intensive maneuvers. The cockpit’s design prioritizes situational awareness through three large electronic displays and a First Limit Indicator, which simplifies engine data monitoring. Furthermore, the aircraft is fully night vision goggle compatible, enabling safe and effective operations after dark.

This news follows the successful integration of another H135 with the Hiroshima Prefectural Police in late 2025. That aircraft now works seamlessly alongside the department’s existing AS365, demonstrating Airbus’s ability to support mixed fleets in complex operational environments.

Jean-Luc Alfonsi, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Japan, highlighted the aircraft’s role in public service. “We are honoured by the National Police Agency’s continued trust in the H135,” he stated. “Its proven reliability and high performance make it the definitive platform for law enforcement. We remain dedicated to providing the comprehensive support necessary to ensure the NPA meets its critical mission requirements across Japan.”
