Lockheed Martin has marked another significant milestone in its strategic partnership with Japan, successfully delivering the second shipment of advanced radar equipment for the nation’s Aegis System Equipped Vessels (ASEV). facilitated in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation, provides the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD) with the sophisticated AN/SPY-7(V)1 radar system.

This shipment is a critical component of Japan’s plan to field two state-of-the-art ASEVs, both scheduled for commissioning in Japanese Fiscal Years 2027 and 2028. The collaboration highlights a model of efficiency, utilizing a Direct Commercial Sale to expedite the transfer of cutting-edge defense technology.

“Delivering the second ASEV shipment on time is a testament to the strength of our partnership with Japan,” said Chandra Marshall, vice president of Multi-Domain Combat Solutions at Lockheed Martin. “We are not just delivering hardware; we are providing a scalable, mature technology that integrates seamlessly into Japan’s maritime defense strategy, ensuring they have the tools to protect their national interests.”

The AN/SPY-7(V)1 radar represents a generational leap in naval defense technology. Its advanced solid-state design offers superior detection and tracking capabilities, enabling the JMOD to counter complex and evolving threats, from ballistic missiles to advanced aerial attacks. By facilitating simultaneous engagement of multiple targets, the system dramatically enhances the operational effectiveness of the Japanese fleet.

Lockheed Martin’s approach emphasizes risk reduction. While the equipment has been delivered, full system integration and testing of the complete shipset will occur before final handover. This meticulous process ensures that when the system is installed aboard the vessel, it performs flawlessly, keeping the ASEV program on schedule for its 2027 commissioning.

This latest achievement builds on the successful delivery of the first radar shipment in June 2025. By consistently meeting these critical milestones, Lockheed Martin is demonstrating a firm commitment to stability and advanced defense capabilities throughout the Indo-Pacific region, reinforcing a vital alliance built on trust and technological superiority
