Firefly Illuminates Path for Lunar Data Services

by Editorial Staff

One year ago, Firefly’s Blue Ghost lunar lander made history as the first commercial company to successfully land and operate on the Moon. After exceeding mission goals—delivering 120 gigabytes of data, including groundbreaking eclipse imagery and lunar sunset observations—Firefly secured a $10 million NASA contract addendum, marking one of the first commercial lunar data sales.

Now, Firefly is building on that success with Ocula, the first commercial lunar imaging and mapping service. Leveraging the Elytra orbital vehicle, which will serve as a communications relay before remaining operational in lunar orbit for five years, Ocula will offer high-resolution imagery, mineral detection, and situational awareness for the cislunar domain. With government assets like the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter nearing end of life, Ocula provides a low-cost, commercial alternative.

Backed by Firefly’s annual CLPS missions, this data-as-a-service model accelerates innovation, supports Artemis, and strengthens the lunar economy—all while delivering capabilities at a fraction of traditional costs.
