Sierra Space, a leader in defense technology, has announced the successful completion of a critical series of pre-flight tests for its Dream ChaserĀ® spaceplane at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. This achievement marks significant progress toward the vehicle’s inaugural orbital mission, reinforcing its role in national security and space operations.
The comprehensive testing campaign included vital Electromagnetic Interference and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMI/EMC) testing within the Space Systems Processing Facility. This verified the spacecraft’s resilience and operational integrity in the expected electromagnetic environments of spaceflight. Subsequently, the program executed rigorous tow testing at the Launch and Landing Facility. A specially provided Freightliner truck towed the spaceplane at high speeds to simulate landing dynamics and validate its autonomous navigation systems for precise runway returns.
A key milestone was the successful demonstration of the end-to-end communication link. The test confirmed the ability to receive telemetry and send commands between the Dream Chaser spacecraft and its Mission Control Center in Louisville, Colorado, utilizing NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System. This validates the real-time command and control architecture essential for all mission phases. The campaign concluded with a post-landing recovery rehearsal, practicing the safing of vehicle systems and demonstrating timely access to sensitive payloads upon return.
With these tests complete, the Dream Chaser is scheduled for a final round of acoustic testing in December 2025. Following this, the vehicle will undergo modifications in Colorado to enhance its capabilities for specific national security applications. These planned enhancements are designed to expand the spacecraft’s mission versatility and demonstrate its capacity to fulfill a wide array of defense requirements.
The program remains on track for its first launch to Low Earth Orbit, targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. This demonstration mission, under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services (CRS-2) contract, will culminate in a runway landing at Vandenberg Space Force Base, showcasing the spacecraft’s reusability.
