South Africa’s power utility is taking to the skies to secure its grid. The National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) has placed a firm order for seven Bell 407GXi helicopters, a deal announced at the VAI Verticon 2026 convention. The aircraft will be deployed for critical high-voltage powerline maintenance, emergency response, and logistical support across the nation’s expanding transmission network.

The timing of the fleet renewal is strategic. With a massive infrastructure program underway to construct over 14,000 kilometers of new lines, the NTCSA requires reliable aerial assets to both build and protect its assets. The Bell 407GXi, known globally as a utility workhorse, offers the single-pilot Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) capability necessary to operate in demanding conditions. Its spacious cabin can accommodate up to five crew members along with essential gear, making it ideal for remote repair missions.

Monde Bala, CEO of NTCSA, emphasized that dependable aviation is central to maintaining grid integrity during this period of rapid expansion. The arrival of these helicopters will bolster the company’s ability to monitor existing infrastructure while supporting new generation capacity projects.

Tim Evans, Managing Director for Bell in the Middle East and Africa, noted that the NTCSA is joining a global community of operators who rely on the 407 platform for its multi-mission versatility. Equipped with the advanced Garmin G1000H NXi Flight Deck, the helicopters will provide pilots with enhanced situational awareness, reducing workload during complex low-level utility flights.
