German shipbuilder thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Canadian training giant CAE have formalized a strategic partnership, signing a Teaming Agreement to compete for work on Canada’s future submarine fleet. The collaboration is specifically designed to address the complex training needs of the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP).
The agreement establishes a framework for the two companies to jointly develop and deliver comprehensive training and simulation solutions. This will encompass advanced simulation systems, the creation of both digital and physical training infrastructure, facility management, and long-term in-service support. The goal is to create a holistic training ecosystem that ensures the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) can maintain peak operational readiness throughout the lifecycle of its future submarines.
Executives from both firms emphasized the critical role of preparation in submarine warfare. Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS, highlighted that training is a fundamental pillar of naval effectiveness. He noted that integrating CAE’s global expertise in simulation technology is key to offering Canada a sustainable and cohesive training package as part of any future submarine offering.
CAE’s leadership echoed this sentiment, focusing on the human element of naval operations. Matt Bromberg, President and CEO of CAE, stressed that submarine missions demand flawless precision and teamwork. He framed the partnership as a commitment to providing RCN crews with training environments that accurately replicate the high-pressure conditions of underwater operations, thereby strengthening Canada’s long-term naval readiness.
Beyond the immediate Canadian requirement, the Teaming Agreement also lays the groundwork for future international collaboration. The partners intend to explore opportunities on global export programs, leveraging TKMS’s extensive customer network and CAE’s worldwide training infrastructure. The alliance underscores a mutual commitment to fostering domestic capability and delivering long-term economic benefits within Canada.
