Lufthansa Technik has achieved a significant milestone in its partnership with Pratt & Whitney, completing its 1,000th overhaul of a Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine. The accomplishment underscores the strength of a globally integrated network spanning facilities in Poland, Germany, North America, and China.
At the heart of this operation is EME Aero in Jasionka, Poland—a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines. The facility has evolved into one of the world’s most advanced GTF service centers, handling everything from quick turns to complete overhauls for engines powering the Airbus A320neo, A220, and Embraer E-Jet families. Employing over 1,200 people and operating two test stands, EME Aero is on track to reach 500 shop visits annually by 2028.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey (LTAA) in Germany has solidified its reputation as a pioneer within the GTF network. Specializing in the PW1500G engine for the A220 since 2018, LTAA has expanded its capabilities to meet growing demand, recently inaugurating a 10,000-square-meter logistics center. The Alzey team recently celebrated its 300th GTF engine induction.
The journey to 1,000 overhauls began over seven years ago in Hamburg, where engine shops built foundational expertise and qualified international teams. By mid-2024, that knowledge was successfully transferred to partner locations, which now drive the program forward.
Beyond major overhauls, Lufthansa Technik’s Mobile Engine Services provide on-site support at strategic hubs in Frankfurt, Montreal, Tulsa, and Shenzhen. These teams ensure rapid engine returns to service, minimizing operational downtime for customers worldwide.
“This milestone of 1,000 engines is a powerful testament to our partnership with Pratt & Whitney and the ultimate proof that our collaborative network approach is a success,” said Derrick Siebert, Vice President Engine Services at Lufthansa Technik. “We haven’t just built up capacity: we have created a system in which each site contributes its strengths. This enables us to act flexibly as a team within our network and prove ourselves to be the reliable partner for the growing GTF fleet worldwide.”
